Ecological dynamics
The potential plant cover is open to moderately heavy brush with at least 50% cover of ceanothus (Ceanothus spp.), white and black sage (Salvia apiana and S. mellifera), and California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum). Some of the more open areas will be oak woodlands.
The herbaceous understory and openings should have at least 70% cover, including, needlegrasses (Nassella spp.), blue wildrye (Elymus glaucus), soft chess (Bromus hordeaceous), wild oats (Avena spp.), ripgut brome (Bromus diandrus), red brome (Bromus rubens), annual fescues (Vulpia spp.), mouse barley (Hordeum murinum), nitgrass (Gastridium phleoides), fiddleneck (Amsinkia spp.), popcornflower (Plagiobothrys spp.), and burclover (Medicago spp.).
Estimated total herbage yields are 600 lbs./acre in favorable years and 100 lbs./acre in unfavorable years. Estimated usable forage production is 200 lbs./acre in favorable years and in unfavorable years this site may not produce any usable forage.
Plant density (ground cover) is moderate, 50 to 60% of the ground surface.
Litter should be sufficient to cover the soil surface in a rather continuous layer 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Decaying litter from previous years should be evident. There should be no active washing or soil movement.
