Ecological dynamics
The potential plant cover should be about 70% shrubs and trees, including, Fremont's cottonwood (Populus fremontii), CA Sycamore (Platanus racemosa), Willows (Salix spp.), Baccharis spp., and some CA sagebrush (Artemisia californica) and goldenbush (Ericameria spp.). The herbaceous layer should be about 30% cover, including, needlegrasses (Nassella spp.), Giant wildrye (Leymus condensatus), deergrass (Muhlenbergia rigens), soft chess (Bromus hordeaceous), red brome (Bromus rubens), and filaree (Erodium spp.).
Estimated total herbage yields in favorable years are 700 lbs./acre and in unfavorable years 100 lbs./acre.
Plant density (ground cover) is variable, but usually low, from 15 to 30%.
There should be a good litter accumulation of dry grass with numerous partly grazed and ungrazed plants at the end of the grazing season. However, because the grass stand often is open, litter may not cover the ground. Old decayed litter from previous years should be evident.
