Soil features
This site is characterized by very deep, well drained soils that have a claypan which underlies the surface at about 8 inches. This hinders root growth, but does not stop it. They formed in old alluvium from sedimentary rocks and are on old dissected terraces. Fertility is low. Typically, the surface layer is sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam or very gravelly sandy clay loam 8 inches thick. The upper subsoil is clay 10 inches thick. The lower subsoil is clay loam 30 inches thick. The substratum is loam to a depth of 60 inches or more. Available water capacity is high to very high. Permeability is moderately rapid to a depth of 8 inches and very slow below this depth.
