Climatic features
The overall climate is characterized by relatively warm to hot summers and moderately cold winters. Eighty to ninety percent of the total annual precipitation occurs during the months of October through May as a mixture of rain and snow from low-intensity, Pacific frontal storms. Additional moisture is occasionally received from summer thundershowers, but not in amounts that significantly affect soil moisture.
Average annual snow is 25 inches. Average monthly snow (inches): October (0.2), November (3.2), December (7.8), January (7.7), February (4.4), March (1.4), April (0.3). The average annual days with precipitation is about 51. Average monthly days with precipitation: January (6), February (5), March (6), April (5), May (5), June (4), July (2), August (2), September (2), October (3), November (7), December (7).
The mean annual air temperature is about 49 degrees F and extremes range from 114 degrees F to -28 degrees F. The optimal period for perennial grass growth is 45 days and occurs from early-May to mid-June, depending upon current climatic conditions.Table 3 Representative climatic features

Rangeland health reference sheet
Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health is a qualitative assessment protocol used to determine ecosystem condition based on benchmark characteristics described in the Reference Sheet. A suite of 17 (or more) indicators are typically considered in an assessment. The ecological site(s) representative of an assessment location must be known prior to applying the protocol and must be verified based on soils and climate. Current plant community cannot be used to identify the ecological site.
